Start with the fact that should frame every 2027 prediction: as of the end of the 2025-26 season, the NBA had crowned a different champion in eight straight years, the longest such run in league history. Nobody has repeated in nearly a decade. So when you pick a favorite in July, you're not picking a dynasty. You're picking the team best built to survive a league that's turned into a demolition derby.
And what a demolition this offseason has been.
The league remade itself in three weeks
Start with the dominoes. On June 22, the Milwaukee Bucks traded two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, along with Bobby Portis, to the Miami Heat, for a haul headlined by Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, the No. 13 pick, and a stack of future firsts. That was the first domino. Then the Boston Celtics dealt All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and picks, a move CBS Sports called "the biggest offseason stunner." The Clippers agreed to send two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, though that one's on hold pending a league investigation into alleged impermissible benefits, so don't ink it yet. LaMelo Ball landed in Minnesota, Ja Morant in Portland, Walker Kessler in Los Angeles. The Lakers even shipped Deandre Ayton to Washington a day later.
Everybody moved. That's the backdrop for the argument I want to make.
The case for standing pat
My 2027 title favorite is the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the reason is almost boringly simple: they didn't have to touch anything.
This is the team that, for the second straight season, clinched the top seed in the Western Conference, a league-best 64-18, two games clear of the Spurs, behind two-time defending MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. They lost in the conference finals, which is exactly the point. They were right there. In a parity era, the team that comes up a round short and brings its core back intact is usually better off than the ones scrambling to blend star pairings that have never shared a court.
Giannis in Miami, Brown in Philadelphia, a possible Kawhi reunion in Toronto: those are all bets on chemistry that doesn't exist yet. OKC is a bet on chemistry that already produced 64 wins. When the rest of the West is teaching new stars a new language, continuity stops being a nice-to-have. It becomes a real edge.
Why not the field
The books see it close. As of early-to-mid July 2026, DraftKings had both San Antonio and Oklahoma City as co-favorites at +270, with the champion Knicks at +850 and the Celtics next at +1300. San Antonio is the tempting pick. They made the Finals and locked Victor Wembanyama into a five-year, $252 million extension. But they also lost that series 4-1, and I'll take the deeper, more proven roster over the flashier one.
