Anne Hathaway guessed OG Anunoby's name with a card stuck to her forehead, and the internet split into two camps. One wants to crown her the rare celebrity who actually watches the sport. The other says it's a parlor trick, that Josh Hartnett quietly fed her the clue, and that any famous person can get handed a win on camera to make content. The second camp is wrong, and it has almost nothing to do with the guessing game itself.
Here's the setup. Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Hartnett were promoting their new film "Verity" on First We Feast, playing a name-guessing bit called Wildcard. Hathaway pulled Anunoby. Johnson stared at the name like it was a typo, blurted "That's not real," then doubled down with "That's a real person?" Hartnett offered a nudge about the "OG" standing for something that goes way back. Hathaway got there, and she didn't stop at the name. She launched into a full scouting report: "Game 4 of the NBA championship, one of the greatest baskets ever scored by a player is OG Anunoby, and you just have to watch it." She called it "poetry in motion." She called it "divine."
Fine, Hartnett helped. So what? A hint can get you to a name, but it doesn't produce an unprompted, giddy breakdown of a specific game-winning tip-in, delivered to two co-stars who had no idea the man existed. That breakdown had to come from somewhere real.
The single guess was never the real evidence anyway. The evidence is everything stacked behind it. Back in November 2024, Anunoby nearly flattened Hathaway chasing a loose ball at a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. She posted about it herself, unprompted, thrilled: "I almost got crashed into last night! I've always wanted that to happen. Thanks, OG!" He replied "You're welcome." She's the kind of fan who asks for courtside seats as a birthday present. She went viral gushing about Anunoby on Fallon months before the Knicks won anything. And when Fallon later made her choose between another Knicks championship and another Oscar, she picked the Knicks. A woman with an Academy Award said she'd rather watch her team win.
The thing Johnson couldn't believe was real actually happened, and recently. Earlier this year the Knicks won their first title in 53 years, and Anunoby's Game 4 tip-in capped the largest single-game comeback in Finals history against San Antonio, pushing them to a 3-1 lead before they closed it out. Hathaway was reliving the best night of her fan life to people who'd rather talk about the movie.
The mockery aimed at Johnson for her blank stare is a little unfair. Not everyone has to know a basketball player. That's exactly why Hathaway stands out. The cameras simply caught her being a fan.
