The number that matters isn't $75 million. It's $3 million.
That's how much less, per year, Connor Bedard is making than Leo Carlsson. The Blackhawks announced Saturday that Bedard agreed to a five-year deal worth $75 million, carrying a $15 million cap hit that runs from 2026-27 through 2030-31. Carlsson reset the market for Anaheim at $18 million, and Bedard's camp, led by agent Don Meehan, could have chased that ceiling. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, they held the line at the number they'd already set, and the deal landed $3 million a year under Carlsson.
That's really the whole story. Chicago got its franchise player to sign for less than the guy who blew the market open weeks earlier, and Bedard did it because he wanted to be there. In his own words: "Obviously very happy to get it done. I'm very happy with the amount of money I'm making. It's a lot."
This is a bet-the-franchise move, no question. It isn't a rushed overpay, and I'll defend that.
The scary version of this story
The skeptics have a real case worth hearing out. Bedard has never played in a full-format NHL playoff game. Chicago hasn't made the postseason since the expanded field after the 2020 season. The Blackhawks just handed the biggest contract in franchise history to a 21-year-old who's spent his whole career on a team that hasn't sniffed spring hockey in six years. That's a lot of risk riding on one signature.
The injury history makes it worse. This deal closed ten days after Bedard had surgery on his left shoulder, hurt while skating with NHL players in western Canada. He's expected to miss the start of the season, with recovery pegged at roughly four months, and Bedard himself won't commit to a return date. It's his second shoulder issue in about eight months. He's played fewer than 70 games in two of his three seasons, including a rookie stretch lost to a fractured jaw and a chunk of this past season after a right-shoulder injury against St. Louis. Yardbarker calls it, even under a rising cap, "very likely an overpay in the short-term," though it stops well short of calling it a disaster: "not a terrible overpay, not a cap-crushing overpay."
That's a fair, honest worry. It's just not the right way to price a player like this.
What you're actually paying for
You don't judge generational talent by what the roster around him did last year. You sign him because the alternative is watching him become someone else's problem.
Look at what Bedard has already done: first overall pick in 2023, Calder winner as a rookie after leading all NHL first-year skaters with 22 goals and 61 points in 68 games. This past season he set career highs across the board, 30 goals, 45 assists, 75 points in 69 games, tops on the team. He's the third player in franchise history to score 30 goals at 20 or younger, joining Jonathan Toews and Eric Daze, and the youngest to reach 200 career points in team history.
Now look at the market. His $15 million cap hit ranks third among the league's highest-paid players for 2026-27, behind only Carlsson and Kirill Kaprizov, ahead of Leon Draisaitl, Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews. The cap isn't going anywhere but up. In three or four years, $15 million for a point-per-game center in his prime is going to look cheap.
That's the whole logic of buying young: you eat the risk now to lock the number before the player forces it higher. The alternative was letting him drift toward unrestricted free agency, or worse, fielding an offer sheet on a superstar you have no leverage to match. Bedard closed that door himself, waving off offer-sheet talk and saying he only wanted to play in Chicago. You take that yes and you run with it.
The bet that isn't priced yet
Signing Bedard was the easy part. The hard part is what happens around him, and that's where I'd actually get nervous.
Outside of Bedard, only one Blackhawk topped 50 points last season, and it was Tyler Bertuzzi. Chicago traded away its entire leadership group in March, which is how a 21-year-old ended up wearing an alternate captain's letter. They've started rebuilding, adding defenseman Bowen Byram in a June trade with Buffalo and signing prospect Roman Kantserov in the spring, and they're reportedly sitting on around $14.1 million in cap space to keep going.
That space is the real test. Pay a superstar $15 million and strand him on a team that can't score around him, and the contract sours fast. Spend that room on a genuine running mate, and the deal ages into a steal. The Bedard signing didn't finish the rebuild, it just started the clock.
This is smart asset management, not a rushed overpay. Chicago paid before the proof piled up, got a discount off the player who'd just reset the market, and kept someone who wanted to stay. The only way this turns into a mistake is if the people who signed him stop building around him.
Get Bedard a second star. Then this looks like the bargain it already is.
