Cristiano Ronaldo won the BOAT award on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, beating Lionel Messi. Look at how France Football reached that result: it ran a public vote on the Ballon d'Or website and charged fans a euro a ballot. It's a social-media poll with a cover charge.
France Football built it this way on purpose. The body that owns the actual Ballon d'Or, the one decided by a panel of specialist journalists, took the keys away from that panel and handed them to anyone with a phone and a euro to spare. It launched the thing to mark the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d'Or and unveiled it two days after Harry Kane collected the real 2026 prize. Anniversary content, monetized: nostalgia with a card reader attached.
The BOAT rankings can't rule on who was greatest. When entry costs a payment and the only qualification is caring enough to spend it, the poll measures who has the louder fanbase and the deeper willingness to pay for a result they already wanted. Ronaldo has that in abundance. Messi finished second, and the eight other legends on the ballot, van Basten, Platini, Cruyff, the Brazilian Ronaldo, Beckenbauer, Di Stefano and the rest, were never in it. This poll was always going to sort itself into the two men whose supporters treat every vote as a referendum on the other guy.
The 2008 season that topped the list needs none of this. That year Ronaldo won the Premier League and the Champions League with Manchester United and scored 42 goals in all competitions, 31 of them in the league. He was the first Manchester United player to win the Ballon d'Or since George Best in 1968. That campaign is remembered on its own terms, and it would be remembered exactly the same if France Football had never dreamed up a pay-per-click sequel.
Same goes for the résumé underneath. All five of Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or-winning seasons landed in the BOAT top 10, with Messi taking the other five spots. Strip away the euro and the branding and you're left with a plain truth that was already true: these two spent more than a decade lapping the rest of the planet. The ranking just repackaged that.
There's no physical trophy, either. France Football built an award with a winner, a top 10 and a marketing push, and forgot to make the actual object. The ballots were the actual product.
Cheer the career all you want. It earns it. A one-euro phone poll doesn't get to pass judgment on the sport's own history. France Football invoiced Ronaldo's fans and read the result back to them as a verdict.
