You have to work at this. Losing a two-touchdown lead is common enough. Losing by 13 in overtime, after keeping the other team out of the end zone for most of the night, takes real effort, and East Carolina pulled it off Thursday in Birmingham.
Start with what the Pirates had going. A 14-0 lead, built fast when Dawson Quarterman recovered a fumble in the end zone. UAB couldn't find the end zone for nearly the whole game, and ECU carried an eight-point cushion into the fourth quarter with the clock bleeding out. Noah Perez even dropped a pooch punt that pinned the Blazers on their own 7 with 1:36 left. Everything you'd want to close out a road game, ECU had it.
Then the defense gave it all back in the final 96 seconds. UAB marched roughly 93 yards with no timeouts, in under a minute and a half, for the touchdown that mattered. Ryder Burton ran in the two-point conversion to tie it 17-17 and force overtime. A unit that had smothered the Blazers for three-plus quarters picked the worst possible moment to stop tackling. You can credit UAB's nerve all you want. A defense built to finish games closes out that drive, and ECU's didn't.
Overtime made it worse. Burton threw a 6-yard touchdown to Rod Robinson II, and when ECU answered, Emory Williams threw it straight to Delvon Gulley, who ran it back 80 yards the other way. That's how 17-17 turns into 30-17: a defense that quit on one drive, an offense that handed the ball over on the next possession that mattered.
Blame comes down to the late-game execution, which is a polite way of saying the coaching staff. Blake Harrell's team had this game won and couldn't finish it. The failures are right there on tape: a no-timeout, nearly-100-yard drive allowed in regulation, then a killer interception in overtime. It's a team that doesn't yet know how to protect a lead.
None of that erases what Harrell has built. He went 17-7 before this game, with a Military Bowl win in each of his two full seasons and a 9-4 run in 2025. At 3-3 and 1-1 in the American, ECU still has Memphis, Temple, South Florida, Charlotte, Army and Florida Atlantic left, and three more wins gets them to a bowl. This loss doesn't torch the season. Anyone calling for a change is judging two years of work off one scoreboard.
Still, a good coach can get outcoached down the stretch, and that's what happened here. UAB deserves credit for refusing to fold. Alex Mortensen has that program playing hard, and 4-3 with a ranked upset on the resume is real progress from the wreckage Trent Dilfer left behind. Good teams make you beat them. The Pirates just handed this one over.
A 13-point overtime margin can look worse than the game actually played. This one doesn't. ECU led almost wire to wire and lost it through soft defense and a reckless throw. Blow a lead like that and the box score stops being an accident. It becomes a verdict on whether the team can be trusted with a fourth quarter. Right now, East Carolina can't be.
