Somewhere inside the Flyers, someone decided the smart move during a brutal start was to let reporters know the organization is fed up with Travis Konecny. The team can't win a game, and the name being quietly shopped around is the guy who's actually been producing on offense. That's a scapegoat hunt, and it's a cheap one.
He's one of the few forwards who shows up looking like he actually wants to be good, and Philadelphia's problems lie elsewhere. When he spoke about the skid, what came out was "I just want to make the playoffs." That's a guy still giving everything he's got. If he's frustrated, he's frustrated for the same reason the fans are: he's playing for a team that keeps losing and a plan that keeps not working.
The people who should be sweating are the ones who built this roster. The front office assembled the group that's underperforming. Rick Tocchet is the one steering it. The organization isn't considering a coaching change. Fine. Then own the roster and own the system instead of turning your best forward into the story.
There's a reason leaking "we're frustrated with Konecny" is so tempting. It's easier than admitting the roster was built wrong or the coaching isn't working. Point at one recognizable name and let the fanbase do the rest, and the executives who signed off on all of this stay out of frame. It's the oldest trick a struggling team has.
Trading Konecny could still make sense for a team that's rebuilding, purely as asset management. A good player on a losing team is exactly the kind of chip you cash while his value is high. Leaking frustration with him to reporters is blame-shifting, plain and simple, and Philadelphia is doing that while letting everyone assume it's strategy.
If the Flyers want to move Konecny for a haul that helps the rebuild, do it with a straight face and explain why. What they shouldn't get away with is bleeding frustration into the press about the one guy on the roster who's been pulling his weight, as if he's the reason the whole thing is sinking. He isn't. The people doing the leaking are the ones who built and coached this team, and they know exactly where the blame belongs.
