Mbappé's 37th-minute goal against Sevilla was one of the best you'll see all season. Jude Bellingham flicked a backheel into his path, Mbappé spun through a roulette turn into the box, slid past the goalkeeper and rolled it in. Pure, filthy quality. It proves nothing about whether he's now clearly better than Vinícius Júnior, because Vinícius wasn't on the pitch or even on the bench.
That's the hole at the center of every "Mbappé is now the main man" take flying around after Sunday's 4-1 at the Bernabéu. You cannot win a head-to-head against a player who isn't playing. Vinícius was serving a four-match domestic suspension, the fallout from his red card against Villarreal on October 10 for violent conduct and his reaction to it. He'll miss Sevilla, next week's Clásico at Barcelona, and two more league games, with a return slated for Celta Vigo on November 22 after the international break. So when people say Sunday showed the "gap in quality," the honest answer is that they watched one of two forwards and declared a winner.
Strip the hype and the facts are modest. Arda Güler opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Mbappé doubled it with his wonder goal seven minutes later, then buried a penalty in the 63rd. Manuel Bueno pulled one back for Sevilla, Yan Diomande added a fourth, and Real Madrid climbed into third in La Liga after the round, behind Barcelona and Atlético. A rout, a Man of the Match trophy, and a highlight reel that'll run for months. None of it is a referendum on Vinícius.
Sunday fed the machine that's been trying to shove Vinícius out the door for weeks. Marcel Desailly went on the record saying Madrid "should have let Vinicius leave" and that the Mbappé-Vinícius "partnership has not proven successful." The two keep tripping over each other on the left, their heat maps in the derby looked like one player, and the coexistence question has become José Mourinho's weekly headache. A brilliant Mbappé game with Vinícius banned is exactly the ammunition that crowd wanted. Convenient. Not meaningful.
The partnership isn't working yet, and Mourinho has a real tactical problem to solve. Use the derby for that argument, where both played and both underwhelmed, that's the real evidence. Sunday doesn't count. Judging Vinícius as the expendable one off a match he was legally barred from is lazy, and it ignores everything he's done for this club.
Mbappé was spectacular against Sevilla. Enjoy the goal. Just don't pretend a man scoring while his rival sits out a ban tells you who the best player is. It tells you who was allowed to play.
