Nobody wants to say this out loud at midseason, but the National League MVP race is over. It was over before anybody boarded a flight to Philadelphia.
We're roughly halfway home. As of July 17, 2026, every team has cleared 81 games, so this is a genuine midseason snapshot, not a settled outcome. Fine. But some things are settled anyway. Shohei Ohtani is one of them.
The argument is his second job
Stop comparing Ohtani to the field as a hitter. That's the trap. Do that and you get a race.
As a hitter through the All-Star break, Ohtani ranked third in the NL in on-base percentage, wRC+ and OPS, fifth in home runs and slugging, and seventh in fWAR. That's strong production, but it wouldn't lock up MVP on its own. ESPN laid out a hypothetical that should end every argument: if Ohtani's pitching didn't count, he'd rank sixth in the NL MVP race, and Pete Crow-Armstrong would be the player to beat, and it wouldn't be close.
But the pitching does count, and that changes everything.
In his first full season as a starter since 2023, Ohtani carried a 1.79 ERA through 85 2/3 innings with 95 strikeouts at the break. The full line: an 8-2 record across 14 starts, a 0.95 WHIP and a 95-to-26 strikeout-to-walk ratio over those innings. That strikeout total would rank second among all qualified MLB pitchers, behind only Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski.
He's a top-tier NL hitter and maybe the second-best strikeout arm in the sport, in the same body, on the same roster spot. Nobody should vote against that.
The field is good. Just not good enough.
The rivals are real players having real seasons, and I'm not here to knock them.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is the consensus No. 2, and he earned it. The Cubs' season had three acts: a hot start, a monthlong slump, then a strong finish into the break, and PCA closed loud. TheScore put it plainly: if it weren't for Shohei Ohtani, Crow-Armstrong would be a leading MVP candidate. If. He isn't, because Ohtani exists.
Kyle Schwarber led the majors in home runs at the break, a huge reason Philadelphia turned its year around, but a full-time DH role caps how high that case can climb. James Wood is baseball's most underrated young star, a 23-year-old who led the NL in walks, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS and wRC+, trailing only Crow-Armstrong in fWAR. Terrific season. Still just one job.
The betting board agrees to the point of embarrassment. Ohtani sat around -900 to -1000, so short that DraftKings rolled out an Ohtani-versus-the-field market at +650. When the sportsbooks would rather you bet against one man than pick from everyone else, the debate is decorative.
The one thing that can actually change this
The real threat to Ohtani's MVP has nothing to do with hitters. It's his knee.
He's been nursing left knee discomfort since at least June 11. He was scratched from a start over it, then homered in that same game anyway. He went 4-for-11 with two home runs in his final series of the first half, then had the knee drained after the last game before the break, with four days to recover ahead of a second-half opener against the Yankees. His bat hasn't blinked. But his case leans on the two-way workload, and the two-way workload leans on how many innings that knee lets him throw down the stretch.
The only story worth watching in the NL is whether he stays on the mound, not who catches him.
And don't let the All-Star Game confuse you. The AL won that one 4-0 earlier in the week, and the Yankees' Cody Bellinger took the game's MVP. That's a one-night trophy. It has nothing to do with the season-long award, and the season-long NL award already has a name on it.
The race isn't close. It's Shohei Ohtani, and everybody else is auditioning for the runner-up plaque.
