The internet decided TVBoy got the heights wrong. The internet is arguing with itself.
The new mural on Carrer d'En Cortines shows Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé kissing, in their respective jerseys, with a golden ball at their feet nodding to the 2026 Ballon d'Or, which is handed out in London on Monday, October 26, with both of them nominated. It went up in Barcelona two days before Sunday's Clásico at Camp Nou and picked up thousands of likes almost immediately. A loud slice of the reaction skipped straight past the kiss to insist the artist botched the size difference between the two players.
There is no size difference to botch. Barcelona's own bio lists Yamal at 178 cm. Real Madrid's own site lists Mbappé at 178 cm. Wikipedia has both at the same number. The two most authoritative, club-sourced figures put these players at an identical listed height. The people yelling that one of them should tower over the other aren't catching an error. They're inventing one.
Where does the "error" come from? From the swamp of fan-run height trackers that have published wildly different numbers for Yamal for two years, because he's a teenager still growing whose listing has moved around more than once. One site says 180, another has floated 183, and someone picks whichever number suits their argument and calls the painting inaccurate. It's a gullibility problem.
The height detectives forgot one thing: TVBoy is a caricaturist. He exaggerates for effect. Asking a street satirist to hit the tape measure to the centimeter is like marking a political cartoon down for an unflattering nose. The whole form runs on distortion. If you want millimetric accuracy, go read a club medical. If you want a stunt that makes a Catalan street corner talk for a week, this is exactly what it looks like.
The serious objection targets the piece itself, calling it a cheap, attention-seeking gimmick that trivializes two footballers instead of saying anything real about this rivalry. Fine. But that charge collapses the moment you remember who's holding the spray can. In 2017, TVBoy painted Messi and Cristiano kissing at the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, Messi clutching a rose, days before Sant Jordi, and it became one of the most talked-about things he's ever done. This is the same joke, aimed at the same rivalry, nine years on. Calling it empty is like calling a jester shallow for juggling. The provocation is the point: he's needling the people who take it too seriously, which, judging by the comments measuring pixels, is quite a few of you.
It's bait, timed to the week of the first Clásico of the Mbappé-Yamal era and planted on a wall where every phone in the city will find it. Clever bait is still clever. The two biggest stars of the match, nominated for the same gold ball painted at their feet, locked in a kiss that drives both fanbases up the wall: that's a sharper comment on this rivalry than most of the pre-match punditry you'll get before Sunday.
The people reaching for a ruler are the ones who got this week wrong.
