Iowa State fans are furious at the officials this week. I get why. Nobody wants to admit their team just wasn't good enough in the moments that mattered. But blaming the referees for a 31-17 loss to a Utah team that was ranked No. 15 heading into Ames is the softest way to dodge the real conversation.
Iowa State had enough talent on the field to win this game and didn't use it. The Cyclones had a shot to control tempo and lean on their skill guys, and instead they spent long stretches playing conservative, low-ceiling football that let Utah hang around and then take over. You don't get to complain about a whistle in the fourth quarter when your offense spent three quarters refusing to let its own quarterback create anything in space.
Utah did what good teams do when a game gets uncomfortable. Wayshawn Parker pulled them out of a rough third quarter. It's a team with a deep backfield leaning on its best weapon when the game tightened up, and it worked. Iowa State never found the equivalent answer.
Then there's discipline. Morgan Scalley came out after the game proud of his team's "self-constraint" after the whistle, saying the Utes prefer to "do our talking with our pads." That's a coach describing a program that kept its composure in a hostile road environment while the other sideline was unraveling. Composure shows up in the fourth quarter, and Utah had it.
The play-calling complaint about Utah's conservative approach late while protecting a lead is fair to gripe about as bad process, even though it worked out fine for Utah. Conservative doesn't always mean correct. But bad process by the winning team doesn't turn into a stolen game for the loser, and it doesn't hand Iowa State the result it wanted.
Iowa State beat Utah in Salt Lake City two seasons ago in a game that mattered for the Big 12 race. This one wasn't that. This was a team with real talent and a quarterback who needed more run-game touches instead of getting dropped back into obvious passing situations. It just didn't finish. That's on the coaches calling plays and the players executing them.
Stop looking for the referee who lost you this game. He doesn't exist. The team that couldn't put Utah away in the fourth quarter is the one you should be angry at, and it's wearing cardinal and gold.
