No, Illinois does not have the resume to be a top-15 team in the SEC, or in any conference, and the man who said otherwise is the last person who should be floating it.
After beating Nebraska 24-13 on Friday, Bret Bielema reached bowl eligibility and then reached for something bigger. "If we were in the SEC, we'd probably be a top-15 team," he said. It's a fun line to sell a program on. It falls apart the second you look at the 6-3 record he's selling.
Start with the wins, because Bielema wants them to carry him. The Oregon win, 21-10, is legitimate: Oregon sits in the top 25 of the first College Football Playoff rankings this week. Fine. The rest doesn't hold up as well. Illinois needed overtime to beat Michigan State, needed a walk-off field goal to beat Maryland (a team that had already fired its coach and was in the middle of a losing skid, a game Illinois trailed most of the afternoon and won only on the final play), and beat a Nebraska team that came in at 5-3 and left at 5-4. Pull the one genuinely good result out of that pile and what's left is the schedule a solid bowl team beats. That's a long way from a top-15 résumé.
Then the losses, which is where the claim really dies. Ohio State, 19-42: no shame there, that's a real team. Duke, 27-31. And Purdue, 17-24, to a team now sitting at 3-5. A top-15 team in the toughest league in the country does not lose to a group that finishes under .500. It just doesn't happen. There's a reason you don't see three-loss teams parked in the top 15 anywhere, SEC included.
The coach promising Illinois would thrive in the SEC spent five years there and went 11-29 in conference play at Arkansas: 29 losses in five seasons, and he got fired for it. He knows exactly how brutal that league is on anyone who isn't already elite, because he lived it.
The grievance underneath the joke is real. The SEC put five teams in the top 12 of the committee's first rankings, and Big Ten coaches have every right to be annoyed at how that room keeps tilting. That fight is legitimate. Attaching 6-3 Illinois to it isn't.
Illinois doesn't need the lie. Three straight years of postseason play, a four-game winning streak, a win over Oregon, a program clearly climbing, with road games left at UCLA and home against Iowa still to come. That's a good story told straight. Calling it a top-15 SEC team insults the league Bielema already failed in, and invites everyone to pull up the 11-29.
