The Maple Leafs walked into the Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday at 7-4-2, winners of four straight themselves, having just hung seven goals on Edmonton two nights earlier. Toronto was one of the league's best offensive teams through the first stretch of the season. Calgary beat that team, 5-2, running its own streak to four games and closing out a perfect homestand.
A blowout over a tired, limping opponent is just a good night. A win like this, against a team scoring at a near-elite rate and riding its own momentum, is one you can take seriously.
The reasons behind it are specific enough to call this the start of something real. Matvei Gridin scored twice and set up another. He's been scoring in bunches over his last several games, a 20-year-old just finding his footing at this level. Devin Cooley stopped 26 shots, running his own streak to four straight starts. Mikael Backlund, back in the lineup after missing time with an upper-body injury, scored in his return. It's a team getting healthier at the same moment a rookie is breaking out and a goaltender is stringing together real form. Three things compounding at once, which is what a turning point looks like before anyone's willing to call it one.
Four good games is four good games, and Calgary was sitting below .500 a week before this result. An 82-game season chews up hot streaks like this one without blinking. If Gridin cools off and Cooley has a bad week, this becomes a nice memory from a season that still finishes mid-pack.
The burden falls on anyone arguing the result doesn't matter to explain why beating a 7-4-2 team playing its best hockey of the year isn't impressive. Toronto's own four-game streak died in that building. So did an eight-game run of losses to Calgary, Toronto's longest active winning streak against any opponent. Both streaks ended on the same night, in the Leafs' final regular-season trip to the old Saddledome before Calgary moves into its new arena.
If Gridin keeps scoring and Cooley keeps stopping pucks, with Backlund healthy again, people will look back at this game as the one where the season turned. Calgary earned that claim with this win.
