Ask Mikel Merino and Arsenal are ready to win everything this season. "Absolutely," he said after Tuesday's win over Lille, two wins from two in the Champions League league phase so far. He's right about the squad, but wrong about what's been killing it.
Start with the half that holds up. The Premier League really is there for Arsenal this year, and not entirely because of them. Manchester City are still facing a potential points deduction over their 115 FFP charges, with the case still unresolved, and that's the kind of thing that turns a close title race into a procession. Add Bruno Guimar\u00e3es, the \u00a375m signing from Newcastle, into a midfield that already had Merino, and this is a side built to grind out a domestic season. If injuries stay away, a title is a reasonable thing to say out loud.
Then there's the other trophy, the one Merino folded into the same breezy sentence. Arsenal were "ready" last season too. They reached the Champions League final and lost it to PSG on penalties. The year before that, PSG knocked them out in the semis. Two seasons, same opponent, same outcome, and Merino's answer to all of it is to tell us the mentality is right. The mentality has been right, and it still lost a final on spot-kicks.
Which is why all this readiness talk in October rings hollow. Nobody doubts this squad is good. The question is whether it can win the handful of two-legged nights in spring that actually separate the double-winners from the nearly-men, and it hasn't. Declarations in matchday ten cost nothing. The February-to-April crush, when the fixtures stack up and the treatment room fills, is where this gets tested, and Arsenal are already nursing William Saliba back from injury before the hard months even arrive. If they don't strengthen in January, the same thin spots that have shown up every spring will show up again.
Merino isn't doing anything wrong by saying it. This is what players are supposed to say, and a dressing room that aims low isn't worth much. But confidence and capability aren't the same thing, and Arsenal keep mistaking one for the other. They don't need another reminder that they're ready. They need to stop losing to PSG.
