There's some relief buried in the wording, if you go looking for it. Arsenal confirmed Wednesday that William Saliba won't need surgery on his back, only that he faces an "extended period" out. "Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme," the club said. No operation beats an operation, sure. But strip away the medical language and you're left with a plain fact: one of the best defenders in the world is going to miss a chunk of a title defence, and nobody at the club should be surprised.
This wasn't a freak collision or a bad landing. Saliba had been nursing the back since March. He carried it into the World Cup, where there had been real doubt he'd even feature, then started four games on France's run before it finally gave out. He came off in the 30th minute of the 2-0 semifinal loss to Spain and sat out the 6-4 third-place defeat to England. He told reporters in late June exactly what had been going on: "I've had some minor niggles for several months. I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League." A 25-year-old admitting he'd been gritting his teeth for months is a warning, printed in plain sight.
And it's a warning Arsenal have gotten before, from more than one player, more than once. Ben White's knee gave out in May during the 1-0 win over West Ham near the end of the season, and he missed the Champions League final. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all managed fitness problems across last season, with Rice and Saka then carrying knocks into the tournament in the United States. Jurrien Timber's groin ruled him out of the Netherlands squad before the World Cup even started, an issue that had sidelined him since March. Saliba made 50 appearances across all competitions last season, the year Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the league and went all the way to a final they lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain. Fifty games, a back already complaining, then a summer tournament. The body does the arithmetic even when the fixture list won't.
Arsenal's ceiling is built on a core of first-choice internationals, and that core keeps getting asked to play through breakdowns until the breakdown becomes the story. A snapshot of their fitness list from late December had Gabriel out with a hamstring, Piero Hincapie sidelined by a groin problem, and a long line of defenders waiting behind them. At that point, Myles Lewis-Skelly was the only Arsenal defender who hadn't yet missed a match through injury. That's not bad luck. Since the start of last season, no club in the Premier League has been hit with more fitness problems than Arsenal.
Credit where it's due: Arsenal aren't sitting on their hands. They parted with their head of sports medicine this month and have reportedly brought in outside expertise, including specialists who work with 200-metre sprinters, on the theory that modern footballers need more than traditional sports science. That's a club that knows it has a problem. What it can't fix is the calendar. Mikel Arteta said as much back in March, during yet another international-break withdrawal wave: "It's a period that I don't enjoy a lot, especially when we have 18, 19 players playing and especially with what happened in our recent history with very important players, but it's part of the calendar." He's already lost Odegaard and Calafiori to injuries picked up on international duty. He knows the machinery is grinding his squad down. He just can't switch it off.
Sixteen Arsenal players were initially called up to the World Cup before Timber dropped out. Those who went get a mandatory three weeks off before reporting for pre-season, which is decent of the club and nowhere near enough. Pre-season starts August 1 against Girona, the Community Shield against Manchester City comes in Cardiff on August 16, and the title defence begins at home to promoted Coventry City on Friday, August 21. Arsenal will show up to all of it, and they're still one of the two or three best-equipped squads in the country to chase a title. That hasn't changed. But depth isn't the same as durability, and a squad this good deserves to be judged on whether its best players are actually on the pitch in May. Right now the most reliable prediction I can make about Arsenal isn't where they'll finish. It's that this won't be the last time we're writing one of these.
