Everyone had this one filed under formality. The Rays won 101 games and got to sit home and heal while Cleveland ground through the Tigers, then lined up rested arms against a Guardians rotation running on fumes. Then the games actually got played. The tired team walked out of Tropicana Field with a 7-3 win and a 1-0 lead in the ALCS.
So yes, the people who called this series over before a pitch was thrown looked silly on the first night. That's the fun part. Cleveland started Foster Griffin in Game 1 instead of saving its best arms, basically conceding the rest-versus-rust matchup on paper, and still found a way to take the Rays' home opener. They earned it.
The comeback decided the game. Cleveland chipped away, hung around, then poured it on late. Jose Ramirez was in the middle of it, Chase DeLauter made noise, and Nathaniel Lowe delivered the hit that mattered. That's the version of this offense that scares people, the one that keeps a game close enough for a couple of swings to flip it.
For a lot of Game 1, Cleveland's bats looked like a team that had been told it didn't belong. The win leaned on pitching and defense keeping the Rays from running off. If the offense goes quiet again and the rally doesn't come, this reads very differently.
But "it took them a while to wake up" is a strange way to bury a team that just beat a 101-win club on the road while starting Foster Griffin instead of its top starters. Depth is exactly what you want in October, and Cleveland got contributions up and down the lineup. Tampa Bay had every edge on paper: rest, home field, a healthier staff. It wasn't enough.
Rest only matters if you cash it in. The Rays had days to plan for this and got outplayed in the innings that decided it. One game doesn't win a series, and the rested arms Tampa Bay held back are still coming. But the idea that Cleveland was going to roll over and make this a short, tidy coronation is dead on arrival.
Write the Guardians off again if you want. They've made a habit of making that look dumb, and through one game of this series, they're doing it again.
