Fifty-nine to three against an FCS opponent is the kind of score that should come with an asterisk. Norfolk State was overmatched, and no one should pretend that beating a 1-2 Spartans team means Virginia has arrived as anything more than a team that beat a team it should beat. That part isn't up for debate.
Bury the final score for a second, though, because the real story happened before most fans had finished their first beer. Brandyn Hillman, the safety Virginia brought in via transfer from Michigan, picked off two passes in the first quarter and turned both into short fields that Beau Pribula happily cashed in. That's not a one-off. Hillman also forced turnovers in Virginia's win over N.C. State the week before. Two games, two multi-turnover performances. I'm not ready to call him the best defensive player in the country the way some are already floating; that's still just early-season buzz. But when a transfer safety flips field position by himself in back-to-back games, that's a skill, not a hot streak.
That's the real headline from Friday night, not the 56-point margin. A blowout over an overmatched FCS team tells you almost nothing about a team's ceiling. A safety generating turnovers in back-to-back games against real competition tells you something concrete.
Pribula did exactly what a game manager with a loaded roster should do: stayed efficient and got out before halftime with the game already decided. He went twelve of fourteen with three touchdowns, clean, low-risk football. Offensive coordinator Des Kitchings didn't call a single designed run for him, which is exactly the kind of caution you want with your starter in a game this lopsided. Smart and forgettable, in the best way. Backup Eli Holstein came in and added a couple more scores, and Jacquon Gibson had a multi-touchdown night on the receiving end. The ball got spread around, the confidence got padded, and everyone got out clean.
The most human moment of the night belonged to kicker Will Bettridge, who broke Virginia's career scoring record. He wears No. 41 in honor of a former high school teammate, D'Sean Perry, one of three Virginia players killed on campus in 2022. Bettridge said afterward he tried not to think about the record chase and just wanted to get the win. That matters more than the opponent did.
Norfolk State wasn't a total no-show. The Spartans drove into Virginia territory in the second quarter before the game ran away from them. Quarterback Deljay Bailey threw interceptions on the first two possessions and never found a rhythm after that. Coach Michael Vick is still building something at Norfolk State. It isn't built yet.
Don't crown Virginia off this one. The Cavaliers are 2-0, ranked, and just posted a runaway win, but Norfolk State was never going to be the measuring stick. That comes next week, against West Virginia. If Hillman is still turning games Virginia's way against a real opponent, we're looking at a genuine breakout. If he goes quiet, this week was just what it looked like: a good team beating a lesser one by a lot.
